We know what to expect from Sachin Tendulkar, says David Warner......

The Aussie said his team will have to be on their toes to avoid punishment form Tendulkar, who will be turning be 40 on April 24.
Chennai:  Sachin Tendulkar may be approaching his 40th birthday, but Australian opener David Warner is aware of the threat the senior India batsman could pose in the upcoming Test series.

"I think a guy who has got 25,000 first class runs is a legend. At the end of the day he has got the stats behind him, the experience behind him. We are here playing in his own territory and we know what to expect from the great batsman," Warner said on Tuesday.

The Aussie said his team will have to be on their toes to avoid punishment form Tendulkar, who will be turning be 40 on April 24.

"He can come out and score a hundred in 100 balls or 100 off 200 balls. He was not himself in Australia. We sort of worked on him back home. In these conditions we got to adapt or he would get on top of us. We got to be disciplined and execute our skills or else we would be punished.

"He has scored a 100 in Irani Cup. He has the passion for the game. He was disappointed with the way the other batsmen got out and he shook his head. You don't get a batsman like him shaking his head.

"It shows he still has the passion and he is going to come out and show what he is. He doesn't need to prove anyone.... He is going to make runs for India," he said.

Talking about Harbhajan Singh, who has troubled the Aussies in the past, Warner said, "I don't think there would be too much of chirping. We are good mates off the field. The IPL has brought in good balance between all players.

"In the field off course we are competitive. But there is a line that no one ever crosses. But you are going to get some banter from some of the guys and learn to cop that. We dished out at home and will be prepared to take it. You know the culprits."

Asked if he had spoken to Sehwag, Warner said, "Yeah, I have spoken to him a couple of times. It comes back to the thing he says. We both play cricket. You got stumps that can be knocked over. You have fielder who can catch you out. Try to be relaxed. See the ball and hit the ball."

Warner said he was confident of recovering from the thumb injury ahead of the first Test, starting here on Friday.

"I'm confident of playing the first Test. I have had four long days of training. I have been hitting for an hour in the nets to make sure I middle the ball and to see if there is any pain if I go on. I have iced it after every training. It's a little sour. But that's what happens after a break.

"I caught about 50 per cent and there was a slight pain. And I would be using a guard to protect my thumb in the Tests. So I am 100 per cent ready to go for the first Test.

On using any protection for the injured thumb, the 26-year-old said, "I have got a rubber thing that. There is a guard that sits around my thump. So if I get hit I'm protected. I used in the practice and got hit by a spinner. It's painful but I am alright.

"I am under the process in order to get ready for the first Test. If I am not 100 per cent then I wont play. I have been batting in the nets and want to do the job for my team."

He said the IPL helps him in getting the necessary batting parctice for important series in the Indian sub-continent.

"I get practice when I come over to India for IPL in practice wickets. You don't need to practice for T20's. Because it's all about backing your strengths. And that's what you do in Tests as well. I would back my instincts and if rest of the guys can also do that we are in for a good series."

A lot has been written about the Australian's weakness against quality spinners on turning tracks, and Warner said, "It's important to come down the wicket and use the depth of crease. I would like to be on top of the bowlers and putting pressure. When you have close in fielder it's easier for me to hit sixes. But you have to respect the good ball."

Asked about Shane Watson's place in the team, Warner said, "We have been fantastic as a team in the past 12 months. We have played good cricket. I don't know why people are questioning some our spots in the team.

"We won against India. We lost one day of 15 days of cricket against South Africa. We won against Sri Lanka. We are back here playing India and try to do the same what we did in Australia."

As far as opening the batting with Ed Cowan was concerned, Warner said they have developed a good understanding.

"The last 12 months have been good for us. We have understood each other a lot. This summer we were little scratchy between wickets. When you call for singles we were ball watching, you should be trusting our instincts. That's important. We are complimenting each other.

"It's crucial to get runs of the new ball. We know that 100 for none is good enough than 100 for four like the other day. So we have set a goal to bat 30 overs among us top-order batsman  -- me, Cowan and Phil Hughes."

And about the XI for the first Test, he said, "I'm glad that I'm not the captain. The selectors and the team management have a tough job on their hands. There has been a lot of speculation on what the team is going to be.

"But at the end of the day it's going to be the captain, coach and selectors who will decide the eleven. We would know the team in a couple of days."

Injured Rafael Nadal draws inspiration from Ronaldo.........

Sao Paulo:  Rafael Nadal is drawing inspiration from Brazilian football great Ronaldo to continue his successful return from injury.

With Ronaldo watching, Nadal took an important step on Sunday by winning the Brazil Open for his first title after a seven-month layoff to treat his left knee. Now he wants to repeat the Brazilian's successful story of recovery from much more serious injuries.

Nadal said Ronaldo is "an example" to be followed because of his determination to rebound from a series of knee injuries that threatened his career.

Despite winning again, the Spaniard is still bothered by his knee and said he is far from fully recovered, although he hopes the victory in front of Ronaldo will mark a new beginning in his career.

"Ronaldo is an example to a lot of people because of all that he was able to achieve despite what he had to go through with all the knee problems in his career," Nadal said. "He is definitely an example to me. He's an example of determination and hard work."

Ronaldo ended his career as one of the world's top strikers after overcoming three serious knee operations. The former Barcelona, Real Madrid, Inter Milan and AC Milan striker won two World Cups with Brazil and remains the tournament's all-time leading scorer with 15 goals.

Nadal said he has always admired Ronaldo, and as a kid proudly took a photo with the striker when he played for Barcelona in the late 1990s.

"He was unstoppable, one of the best players of all time despite all the bad luck he had with the knee," Nadal said.

The Spaniard was out of action since last year because a torn and inflamed tendon in his knee, an injury that he says is improving but still bothers him from time to time. He downplayed his difficulties compared to Ronaldo's, but said he now has a better understanding of what the Brazilian had to go through.

"I didn't have so many problems, I never needed the surgeries," Nadal said. "But I can imagine how hard it must have been for Ronaldo with the complicated surgeries that he had to go through."

Nadal beat former world No. 3 David Nalbandian of Argentina 6-2, 6-3 in Brazil on Sunday, winning his 51st career title and first since beating Novak Djokovic to lift his seventh Roland Garros trophy last June.

The Brazil Open was Nadal's second tournament since his return. He played at the VTR Open in Chile the week before, losing the singles and doubles final. The final in Brazil was only his eighth singles match since the comeback. He withdrew from the doubles in Sao Paulo to rest his knee for the singles tournament.

Nadal looked far from his best in his first two tournaments and said that the knee injury still limited him physically.

"There are days that the knee still hurts and it's very complicated," he said. "I need some time to keep improving and become more competitive again. Let's see how it goes."

The 11-time Grand Slam champion admitted that the level of the competition in Brazil was not as high as in other tournaments but said that it wasn't bad either, giving him the perfect opportunity to put his knee to test.

Nadal will play another clay-court tournament in Mexico later this month and the goal is to be fully fit again by the time Roland Garros arrives in May, although his future schedule will depend on how the knee holds up. He had intended to play in Indian Wells in March, but on Sunday said that he won't know whether he will make it until closer to the tournament.

"We are thinking day-to-day, week-to-week," the 26-year-old Nadal said. "We'll see how I feel before making a decision on where I'll be playing in the near future, it will depend on how the knee improves."

Lifeline: Dhoni's teachers want him to complete B.Com degree.......

An overload of cricket and endorsement deals may have forced Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni to miss his graduation examination, but education, which has no age barrier, will give him a second chance.

Teachers at St Xavier's College, Ranchi are eager to see Dhoni complete his B.Com degree, a feather that is missing from the World Cup-winning captain's burgeoning hat. Dhoni's teachers want their celebrity student to re-enroll for the three-year course.

Dhoni has registered for the B.Com course in 2008. On Monday, 1790 students of his batch passed out from St Xavier's College. "Yes, he (Dhoni) would have been among the students who got the degrees," Principal Nicholas Tete said.

"Dhoni enrolled in 2008, and his registration is valid for five years. And he can renew afresh, (if he wants to complete the course)," Tete said, reports PTI.

"We had prepared study material for his first semester and sent them to him. (But) he did not respond," the principal said. Dhoni, who has office administration and secretarial practice as his subjects, had completed Plus-II in 1999.

"A teacher feels good giving away degrees to successful students, and the students feel happy after completing a course successfully," Jayant Sinha, one of the teachers in the college, said, adding happiness would have been doubled had Dhoni completed the course and got the degree.

"However, he can complete the course in future. Education is a continuing process," Sinha, who is also the college dean, added.

Sri Lanka denies LTTE chief's son was killed in cold blood......

Sri Lanka denies LTTE chief's son was killed in cold blood
Colombo: The Sri Lankan government has described as "diabolical" the allegation, made by UK's Channel 4, that the country's armed forces executed the 12-year-old child of LTTE leader V Prabhakaran in May 2009 soon after they photographed him eating a snack in military custody. Channel 4 alleges that the child was shot dead at close range and then photographed again.(Read editorial in The Independent by Channel 4 documentary director )

The photos of his dead body, riddled with bullets, were released in a documentary last year byChannel 4.  The new photos are part of a new documentary, titled "No War Zone: The Killing Fields of Sri Lanka," to be screened next month in Geneva where the United Nation's Human Rights Council will meet.

Speaking to NDTV, the Sri Lankan High Commissioner in Delhi said "Sri Lankan forces never targeted civilians." He said the new photos are designed to embarrass Sri Lankan ahead of the session of the UN's top human rights body.

In an editorial in The Hindu, Callum Macrae, the director of the Channel 4 documentary writes, "The new photographs are particularly important evidentially, because they prove that Balachandran was not killed in crossfire, or in a battle. His death was deliberate and calculated. The pictures fill in chilling details on the circumstances of his murder - and leave the Sri Lankan government with yet more questions to answer about just how systematic the executions at the end of the war appear to have been." (Read the editorial in The Hindu here)
At last year's session of the UN's top human rights body in Geneva, a resolution was adopted urging Sri Lanka to assign accountability for alleged war crimes by its army in the final phase of the country's civil war against Tamil rebels or the LTTE.

The resolution was backed by India, under stringent pressure from the DMK, which is a senior member of the Prime Minister's coalition.

Today, Mr Karunanidhi's party urged India to vote once again against Sri Lanka at the UNHCR session, where the US plans to move a new resolution against the island for alleged war atrocities.  Reacting to the new photos of the LTTE chief's son, DMK Spokesperson Ilangovan said, " This is yet more proof that President Rajapaksa is a war criminal."

Russian Meteorite: Fragments Of Shattered Space Rock Fetch Thousands, But Fakes Flood Internet........

Meteorite

Fragments of the meteorite which struck the Russian city of Chelyabinsk on Friday has been found - but fakes are already popping up online.
The rock may have injured hundreds and left a 50-foot crater in a frozen lake, but that hasn't stopped locals from hunting the small pieces of 'space dust' in droves, according to reports.
Small pieces of the meteorite have fetched as much as £6,500 on Russian websites, reported to the Daily Mail.
More than 50 pieces have been brought to a laboratory in Yekaterinburg, while international collectors are said to be snapping up the rest.
But experts have already warned that there may be many fakes among the real artefacts.

Physicists May Have Found Dark Matter, The Invisible Scaffolding Of Our Universe....

Dark Matter

Physicists may have finally found hard evidence for the existence of dark matter.
And reports from the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Bostonsay the announcement could come within the next fortnight - if the data holds up.
Dark matter is thought to be the invisible 'stuff' which makes up the bulk of the universe's mass. In fact it's supposed to outnumber regular matter by six to one - even though we can't see it (or at least so far).
Its existence was first proposed in the 1930s, to explain the way that galaxies expand and move in clusters. Later studies of galactic expansion, rotation and distribution added weight - literally - to the idea that dark matter may be needed to explain how the universe works.
(Nasa has a great explanation of the complex idea of dark matter - and the separate concept of dark energy - here.)

London: Details of the new Samsung Galaxy S IV phone have been reportedly leaked on the Internet, just weeks before its rumoured launch.

According to the leaks, the new Galaxy smartphone, which is rumoured to be released as soon as March, is set for a major screen upgrade that would make it the most high-definition mobile in the market, the Daily Mail reports.

According to a document which is said to be leaked by a Korean financial services firm, the Galaxy SIV will boast a 5 inch 1920x1080 display, quad-core processor and will run 2 GB of RAM. The phone will have the latest version of Android Jelly Bean, the document added.

According to other reported leaks, however, the processor will be an ARM-based Qualcomm model equipped, running at 2GHz. Rumours also claim that the camera in the new phone will feature a rather standard 2MP front-facing CCD and a high definition 13MP rear-facing one capable of shooting HD video in 1080p at 30 frames per second.

Tour Game: India A acted against the spirit of the game?.......

Chennai: The three-day practice game between India A and Australia avoided a controversy despite the hosts acting against the spirit of the game while running out a batsman during the final day of the fixture.

During the 48th over of the Australian innings, Peter Siddle flicked left-arm spinner Rakesh Dhurv to midwicket fence and set off for a run. Manpreet Singh Gony threw the ball back at the non-striker’s end after the ball had reportedly bounced off the rope. Siddle was going for the third run when the throw came in.

He was caught short and the India A fielders started celebrating the wicket. According to DNA, Gony had even crossed the boundary line while fielding the ball but still went ahead with the throw.

The on-field umpire reportedly asked Gony about the clearance but he refused to acknowledge that the ball had touched the rope.

Amid the confusion, the umpire referred the decision to the match referee who in the absence of cameras had to adjudge Siddle run out. The visitors didn’t object to the development and consequently a controversy was avoided.

India, UK engage for civil nuclear agreement........

New Delhi: India and Britain have decided to commence negotiations on a bilateral civil nuclear agreement, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said Tuesday.

Speaking to media after meeting the visiting British premier, rime Minister Manmohan Singh said: "I thanked Prime Minister (David) Cameron for the UK's support for India's full membership of the Nuclear Suppliers Group and other multilateral export control regimes."

"We have also decided to commence negotiations on a bilateral civil nuclear agreement," said Singh.

Cameron is in India on a three-day official visit.

The two leaders also discussed the prospects of enhanced cooperation in the development of the defence industrial base of India through greater emphasis on technology transfer, co-development and co-production.

"I have sought his (Cameron) support in ensuring an early conclusion of a fair, balanced and forward looking broad-based India-EU trade and investment agreement, which will open new opportunities for trade and investment between our two countries," said Manmohan Singh.

"Education and science and technology are special areas of India-UK cooperation. I have impressed upon the prime minister (Cameron), the need for a visa regime that facilitates greater movement of people between our two countries so that this cooperation can be further energized," he said.

Ghanta Awards 2013: Salman Khan is the worst actor! ....

Ghanta Awards 2013: Salman Khan is the worst actor!

New Delhi: While there are arrays of awards that celebrate the best performers in Bollywood, the Ghanta awards, on the other hand, are meant for the worst talent in showbiz.

So this year, the awards have been bestowed upon those films and actors who were awful, bizarre or downright amusing.

To begin with, one of the most bankable actors of our nation, Salman Khan, whose films like ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ and’ Dabangg 2’ raked in more than Rs 100 crores at the box office, has quite ironically been awarded the worst actor trophy. On the other hand, there is Sonakshi Sinha, who has been voted the worst actress of 2013 for whatever she did.

We literally burst out laughing when we read that Tusshar Kapoor has been given anything but sexy award for his striptease and man boobs in ‘Kya Super Kool Hain Hum’.

Have a look at the entire list of winners losers of 2013:

Salman Khan-Shah Rukh Khan rivalry: A new level altogether?........

Salman Khan-Shah Rukh Khan rivalry: A new level altogether?

Zeenews Bureau

Delhi: Rumours, reports, and rubbish. When it comes to the two quintessential whales of the Hindi film industry – read: Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan – one doesn’t really know how much is too much. There have been many instances in the past where the two have taken digs at each other; sometimes directly, and obliquely at others. This time, it seems that Salman Khan has resorted to veiled methods of taking pot shots at his competitor – rival, maybe – Shah Rukh Khan.

When it comes to the release of a film, Salman had openly stated a while back that he is averse to the idea of promoting a film the way it is done these days. The ‘Dabangg’ star was quoted as saying, “Today you have to keep aside a month and a half for promotions because producers tie up with so many brands,” and is not really happy doing the same.

Meanwhile, Shah Rukh Khan’s film-promoting skills are not exactly anything that people don’t know. SRK is known to go to every length and breadth of the film promoting spectrum, and before the release of a film, King Khan leaves no stone unturned in cashing in on as much as his producers would want him to.

However, Salman’s comments on the way a film is promoted these days leaves little scope of imagination as to how different his and SRK’s ways are. And for all we know, this might just be another of Salman’s veiled attacks at Shah Rukh!

‘Muslims can see through govt’s anti-Modi tactics’......

New Delhi: In a significant development, an influential Muslim voice has come out in support of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, who is being dubbed as the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate for 2014 Lok Sabha polls.

Jamiat-i-Ulama-Hind chief Maulana Mahmood Madani has said the “situation of the Muslims in Gujarat was bad but it was worse in some of the secular states”.

In an interview with a television channel Madani even said that though the government could create fear about Modi among Muslims, the minority community has seen through these tactics.

Mahmood Madani’s observations are very important as he is known to command major influence at the Deoband-based Darul Uloom, controlled by his uncle Maulana Arshad Madani.

The BJP welcomed the observation from someone close to the ruling elite in India’s leading Islamic seminary and sees as a precursor of things to come.

English daily DNA quoted party spokesperson, Rajiv Pratap Rudy as saying that the minorities have realised the benefits of the development politics practised by the BJP. They had been cheated by the practitioners of vote-bank politics, he said.

But the ‘change’ has been in the works for a while now. It manifested itself profoundly during the recently concluded assembly polls in Gujarat where BJP candidates won in Muslim dominated constituencies.

The assembly win was followed by the spectacular victory registered by the party in the municipal polls where even the party’s Muslim nominees did exceedingly.

The DNA report also quoted a senior BJP leader as he explained that there is large section among the Muslim youth who aspire for better things in life. They are gradually adjusting themselves to the changing reality. They realise that BJP offers a better future in the long run and that is why there is a systematic change of mind-set.

Jet Airways cuts fares by upto 50%; now, book ticket at Rs 2,250........

Zeebiz Bureau

New Delhi: India's second largest carrier Jet Airways on Tuesday slashed the prices of its domestic air ticket by upto 50 percent.

As per media reports, Jet has announced "India's biggest airticket sale" of 20 lakh seats at Rs 2250.

The sale will be applicable for travel upto anytime till December 31 this year. This discounted scheme can be availed by passengers who book tickets before February 24.

Following suit, Indigo airlines has also slashed prices of its ticket between 30 and 40 percent. Although the low-frill airline has made nothing official regarding the validity of the scheme.

The big announcement comes weeks after low-cost airlines Spicejet announced airfares at throw-away prices.

Similar schemes have been launched in the recent past by some airlines to boost their passenger loads. After receiving a good response to a similar promotional offer for its domestic air tickets in November last, Air India had launched a special all-inclusive promotional return fare scheme on its international flights this December.

Bharat Bandh: Two-day trade union strike from midnight...........

New Delhi: The stage appears set for a mega two-day trade union strike starting Wednesday after union leaders failed to arrive at a consensus in talks with the government.

The strike called by country’s 11 registered trade unions, cutting across party lines, will start from Tuesday midnight to protest against the “anti-people” policies of the UPA Govt that include price rise, poor implementation of labour laws and disinvestment in PSUs/increased FDI in various sectors.

Pensions for everyone along with removal of ceiling on bonus and provident fund are among the demands raised by the unions. Apart from all the 11 trade unions, over 2000 independent unions have also joined the protest.

The strike has been called jointly by the Bhartiya Majdoor Sangh (BMS), All India Trade union Congress (INTUC), All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), Hind Mazdoor Sabha (HMS), Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), All India United Trade Union Centre (AIUTUC) and other such organisations.

Given the scale of the mega-strike, normal life is likely to be hit in many parts of the country, with major sectors like banking, transport, ports, power and telecom have agreed to join the protest call.

With some state governments like in Odisha, Bihar, Karnataka among others deciding to support the strike, the two-day strike will hit common people severely. The railways and air services are expected to function normally as they are not part of the strike.

A worried government reached out the union leaders. Yesterday, trade union leaders met a government committee comprising AK Antony, Sharad Pawar and Mallikarjun Kharge.

After the meeting, CITU president A K Padmanabhan said, "The government has nothing to offer. We are going ahead with the strike. We expect it to be hugely successful."

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had also made an appeal to all the trade unions to withdraw their call for a strike as it would cause loss to the economy and inconvenience to general public.

The UPA government has also warned employees of "consequences" including deduction in wages and disciplinary action if they take part in the protest.

In a stern directive, the Department of Personnel and Training has written to secretaries of all central government ministries not to sanction any kind of leave to employees during the period of the proposed strike.
