‘Made in China’ Titanic to repeat 1912 journey...

New Delhi: After copying everything from a paper pin to Paris’ Eiffel Tower, China is set to build a full-size exact replica of the doomed ocean liner Titanic, which went down in the Atlantic during its maiden journey from Southampton in UK to New York in 1912.

The Jinling Shipyard in Nanjing has already signed an initial agreement to build the ship with Australian billionaire mining tycoon Clive Palmer, reports said on Thursday.

Titanic II is due to be completed by 2016; ready to sailed to the UK and prepared for her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York - a repeat of the 1912 journey which ended in disaster.

Efforts are on to resemble the famed luxury liner with the design work being carried out by a consortium of companies. Akin to the original, Titanic II will be 270 metres long and 53 metres high with nine floors and 840 rooms. It will accommodate 2,400 passengers and 900 crew members.

A report said that Palmer’s decision to go for ‘Made in China’ Titanic has prompted scepticism from some about how achievable the project is and how safe the end product will be.

A Global Times editorial said, "Frequent scandals involving shoddy products domestically and internationally have turned the term 'Made in China' into a synonym for cheap and low value-added products." However, the newspaper argued that the project is a chance to prove that the 'Made in China' brand does work.

India to launch Mars mission this year: President......

New Delhi, Feb 21 (PTI) India will launch its first space mission to Mars this year, President Pranab Mukherjee said today. "Several space missions are planned for 2013, including India's first mission to Mars and the launch of our first navigational satellite," Mukherjee said in his maiden Address to the joint sitting of Parliament at the start of the Budget Session. The Indian Space Research Organisation will also put in orbit the first of its seven satellites of the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS). The system is India's version of the Global Positioning System. The Mars Orbiter mission, scheduled for launch in October, will look for signature of life and reasons for loss of atmosphere on the red planet. Under the mission, India will put in orbit a spacecraft using the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle. The satellite will undertake a 300-day journey to Mars and is expected to be put into the Martian orbit in September next year. Mukherjee said the space programme epitomised India's scientific achievements and benefits the country in a number of areas. "The launch of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle on September 9, 2012 marked our 100th space mission. India's first remote sensing satellite RISAT-1, with all-weather imaging capability, was also launched in 2012," he said. PTI SKU SMI

When a thief forced you to take money from the ATM, do not argue or resist, you might not know what he or she might do to you. What you should do is to punch your PIN in the reverse...

Eg: If your PIN is 1234, you punch 4321.

The moment you punch in the reverse, the money will come out, but will be stuck into the machine half way out and it will alert the police without the notice of the thief.

Temple Run 2 was recently released for iOS and Android smartphones. According to Imangi Studios, it has set a record of fastest downloaded mobile game by reaching the milestone with 50 million downloads in just 2 weeks. Temple Run 2 is certainly a great improvement over the original Temple Run; bundled with beautiful new graphics, new obstacles, gorgeous new environments, etc. which is rather impressive. Luckily, a workingpatch for Temple Run 2 is available now in the form of an app on Google Play Store that works like a charm and makes playing the game easier than ever!
Temple Run 2 Patcher is a free Android app that frees you from the fear of getting lost and thus overcomes the restriction to start and play the game from the very beginning. It’s really handy for casual users who usually don’t end up making a good score or don’t have that much gaming patience. This all in one patcher is a jackpot for Temple Run 2thereby powering it up with unlimited coins, unlimited gems, unlimited power-ups, and unlimited boost. To see a browser – Take off its clothes........

This is from a recent trip that I took and met few people who were Firefox users. Most of them were using FireFox at home and IE at work.. and most of them felt that FireFox was “faster” –meaning it would load websites faster and FF itself would load faster..
So, I devised this test and called it the “Naked Browser” challenge. Are you upto taking this? Here is what were are trying to do – kill most of the add-ons in IE and then test it against FF. Here are some step by step instructions -
  1. Make sure you are running the IE8 Release Candidate 1. To make sure that you are on this version, just go to IE Help menu and click on “About Internet Explorer”. you should see Release Candidate 1 mentioned as follows:image
  2. Go to Tools –> Manage Add-Ons. In the Manage Add-Ons window, click on each Application and disable the add-on. You can can disable the add-on by clicking on the “Disable” button located at bottom right, once you have selected the application in the upper window.

  1. image
  2. Next, change the home page for both browsers to the same website of your choice.
  3. Finally, close all the browser windows on your machine. You are all set for the challenge to start.
  4. Browser load test: Start both the browsers by clicking on the shortcuts on the taskbar one after the another. What browser did you see come up faster?
  5. Browsing Speed test: Type your favourite website address in notepad and copy it in memory (Ctrl + C). then in each browser, paste the URL (Ctrl+v) and press go button. Watch for the status bar at the bottom of browser window to say “Done”. Which browser completed loading the website first?
In my experience, IE 8 WAS faster than FireFox in most of the cases for browsing speed and load test. I am using Vista SP2 RC. I will soon be sharing the screen recording of what i experienced shortly here.
also, Microsoft seems to have just released a study that validates what i just mentioned. A Microsoft video has also been released to demo the same. The study has detailed steps on how to test the browsers yourself (much detailed than the one detailed above by me).. in the report, out of 25 websites IE was the fastest for 12. FireFox was fastest in only 4 and in remaining cases Chrome was the fastest.
Take  “Naked Browser” challenge now and tell me what you see!

1966 film on JOHN VON NEUMANN......

John von Neumann made so many fundamental contributions that Paul Halmosremarked that it was almost like von Neumann maintained a list of various subjects that he wanted to touch and develop and he systematically kept ticking items off. This sounds to be remarkably true if one just has a glance at the dizzyingly long “known for” column below his photograph on his wikipedia entry.
John von Neumann with one of his computers.
John von Neumann with one of his computers.
Since Neumann died (young) in 1957, rather unfortunately, there aren’t very many audio/video recordings of his (if I am correct just one 2 minute video recording exists in the public domain so far).
I recently came across a fantastic film on him that I would very highly recommend. Although it is old and the audio quality is not the best, it is certainly worth spending an hour on. The fact that this film features Eugene Wigner,Stanislaw Ulam,  Oskar MorgensternPaul Halmos (whose little presentation I really enjoyed), Herman GoldsteinHans Bethe and Edward Teller (who I heard for the first time, spoke quite interestingly) alone makes it worthwhile.

Microsoft users say goodbye to Hotmail, hello to new Outlook.com......

Microsoft users say goodbye to Hotmail, hello to new Outlook.com
Washington: Microsoft has announced that its new webmail service, Outlook.com, is now set to replace Hotmail.com.

The software giant said that Outlook.com is coming out of beta testing and is now ready for primetime.

The service, which was announced last July, now has 60 million users and will now replace Microsoft's older webmail system.

Microsoft's Hotmail, which was originally MSN Hotmail, has been online since 1997.

Hotmail users will still keep their Hotmail.com email addresses and their contacts and emails will all be moved over, they will just now get a new user interface and all the new features of Outlook.com, ABC News reports.

According to the report, Outlook.com was designed with a similar aesthetic to Microsoft's Windows 8 operating system.

It also includes new social features and a sorting option called Sweep, the report said.

The Sweep feature moves newsletters, promotional messages and other recurring emails into their own folders or to the trash, it added.

God particle may reveal Universe's fate...

God particle may reveal Universe`s fate
London: The eventual fate of our Universe may be determined by probing the properties of the Higgs boson, scientists have said.

They believe that a concept known as vacuum instability could result, billions of years from now, in a new universe opening up in the present one and replacing it, the BBC reported.

It all depends on some precise numbers related to the Higgs that researchers are currently trying to pin down.

A "Higgs-like" particle was first seen at the Large Hadron Collider last year.

Associated with an energy field that pervades all space, the boson helps explain the existence of mass in the cosmos. In other words, it underpins the workings of all the matter we see around us.

Since detecting the particle in their accelerator experiments, researchers at the Geneva lab and at related institutions around the world have begun to theorise on the Higgs' implications for physics.

One idea that it suggests is the possibility of a cyclical universe, in which every so often all of space is renewed.

"It turns out there's a calculation you can do in our Standard Model of particle physics, once you know the mass of the Higgs boson," explained Dr Joseph Lykken, the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory theoretician.

"What happens is you get just a quantum fluctuation that makes a tiny bubble of the vacuum the Universe really wants to be in. And because it's a lower-energy state, this bubble will then expand, basically at the speed of light, and sweep everything before it," Lykken told BBC News.

And the Sun and the Earth will be long gone by this time, he said.

If the calculation on vacuum instability stands up, it will revive an old idea that the Big Bang Universe we observe today is just the latest version in a permanent cycle of events, the scientists noted.

Dr Lykken presented his theory in Boston at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

Rahul Gandhi asks Odisha Congress to revive fortunes....

Bhubaneswar: Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi met party leaders in Odisha Tuesday and asked them to suggest ways to revive the Congress's fortunes as it has been out of power in the state since 2000.

A day after holding discussions with grassroot leaders at Sambalpur town in western Odisha, the 42-year-old leader met local party functionaries from the coastal belt at Cuttack city.

"He held discussions with a large number of local leaders," a Congress leader told a news agency.

"He asked us why the party was out of power for such a long period and what measures are required to bring it back to power," the Congress leader said.

This is the first time that Rahul Gandhi visited the state after assuming charge as Congress vice president. He arrived at Sambalpur Monday and spent the night there.

The Congress has been sitting in the opposition in the state since 2000. In recent months, it has intensified organisational and political activities across Odisha.

Rahul Gandhi's visit to the state is seen as an attempt to infuse fresh vigour in the beleaguered party.

Normal life hit in many parts in Odisha.....

Bhubaneswar: Normal life was hit in many parts of Odisha on Wednesday on the first day of the two-day, nation-wide strike called by Central trade unions.

Commuters faced difficulties as buses, taxis and auto-rickshaws remained off the roads leaving a large number of passengers, including women and children, stranded at bus stands.

Shops, markets, business establishments, petrol pumps and restaurants remained closed and roads wore a deserted look with thin traffic, official sources said.

Banks remained closed with employees picketing and demonstrating at different places.

Train services were disrupted by protesters blocking tracks at many places including the state capital of Bhubaneswar, besides at Cuttack, Balasore, Khurda Road, Berhampur and Sambalpur, railway sources said.

The strike was peaceful so far with police deployed at important places and vital installations.

Marriage to Priya Runchal on John Abraham's mind? ....

Marriage to Priya Runchal on John Abraham's mind?
Delhi: Actor John Abraham, who has been dating investment banker Priya Runchal for a while now, recently cleared the air about how the two met. Following Abraham’s break-up with Bipasha Basu after a nine year long relationship, rumours were rife that Runchal might have acted as a home-wrecker. However, at a promotional event for an upcoming film of the actor, John spoke about his relationship with Runchal.

John apparently clarified that he and Priya hadn’t met at his gym as was earlier thought. A tabloid has quoted the actor as saying, “Priya was here doing her stint at the World Bank. It was much later that she started coming to the same gym where I worked out.”

The ‘Dhoom’ star also spoke about when he is to get hitched. “Right now Priya is studying and she has two more years to go. So it will happen once she completes her education. But we are in a very happy space right now,” says John.

Praising his girlfriend, adds John, “She is a very sorted and mature girl and we respect each other’s space. She is in London right now.”

Seems like all the ladies smitten by the actor have two more years to ogle at him! Well.

‘Himmatwala’ Ajay Devgn- A stellar performer
Mumbai: From a lanky loverboy in ‘Phool Aur Kaante’ to the very dangerous Sultan in ‘Once Upon A Time in Mumbaai’, Ajay Devgn has covered miles with roaring success.

One of the most sought after actors of Hindi Cinema now, Ajay is an actor par excellence, and one who boasts of a great command over all genres ranging from comedy to action to romance and drama.

With two National Awards to his credit, Devgn has evolved to a cult figure by now, one who can send shivers down one’s spine on the one hand and also tickle one’s funny bone through his acting prowess on the other.

From the intense ‘Omkara’ to the flamboyant, manic Gopal in the ‘Golmaal’ series, the actor has only grown from strength to strength.

Now, the ‘Himmatwala’ is all geared up to set the silver screen ablaze by donning a retro avatar in the remake of the 1980s blockbuster by the same name which starred 'Jumping Jack Jeetu' aka Jeetendra and Sridevi.

RGV invites KJo for special screening of 26/11 film...

Mumbai: Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has extended a hand of friendship towards Karan Johar by inviting him to watch his upcoming movie ‘The Attacks of 26/11’. He will arrange a special screening for Karan here soon.

"Karan Johar is one of the prominent filmmakers in the industry. Besides, he is also a good friend and I know him very well. This film has been a satisfying experience for me after a long time, so I wanted to show it to some of my friends," Varma told reporters.

Both the filmmakers have often engaged in a war of words with each other on Twitter, and it is on the social networking platform itself that RGV invited KJo for the movie, which is based on the Mumbai terror attacks in 2008.

"Hey Karan I never ever invited you to see any of my films, but `The Attacks of 26/11` is one film I would really like you to see," Varma wrote to Karan on Twitter.

Varma says he should be holding the screening this weekend.

Over the years, both of them have passed snide remarks over each other`s style of filmmaking, but clarifying his stance, Varma said: "I have never had any problem with Karan. It is media who has written about all these things. Yes, I might have in a funny way commented, but it was not intended other way."

‘The Attacks of 26/11’, co-produced by Alumbra Entertainment and Eros International, features Nana Patekar and Sanjeev Jaiswal in key roles. The film is slated for March 1 release.
