Steyn, Ishant will boost Sunrisers: Kumar Sangakkara.......

Hyderabad skipper Kumar Sangakkara expressed disappointment that Shikhar Dhawan will miss out on the team's first ever game in the T20 Cricket League(T20-League) but added that he believes the pace attack the team boasts of gives it a major boost.

The newly-formed team, which imported most of its players from the now defunct Hyderabad, will play its first game against Pune India on Friday and their skipper was confident that having Dale Steyn and Ishant Sharma in the team will help them make an early impact.

"We missed Ishant last year and I think having him and Dale Steyn spearheading new ball attack is going to be crucial.

"We just need that kind of presence at the top of our bowling attack. We are looking forward to make an impact with them. They can give vital breakthroughs with new ball or in the middle or in any situation," " he told reporters on Monday.

The former Sri Lankan skipper added that the team will sorely miss top-order batsman Shikhar Dhawan.

"Unfortunately, Shikhar Dhawan, who is going to be our most important player, has suffered a fracture and he is out for few weeks. So we have a few new faces coming in," said Sangakkara.

The Stylish left-hander added that he was excited to be back in the T20-League and he had the chance to perform well after disappointing with the Hyderabad over the past 3 years.

"It is not exactly the same team. We have few additions. I am really excited to be back. Over the last three years, under the old franchise, we hadn't really performed as well as we should have."

Sunrisers' chief coach Tom Moody said believes the home-grown players like Ishant and Shikhar Dhawan are important for their make-up. He also added that the team has exciting young talent and hoped that new faces would do well.

"We have seen in five editions of T20-League that there were always one or two players who surprised competition, the players who were relatively unknown to cricketing fraternity in India and also the world," Moody said.

Gilchrist: Challenging times for KXIP.......

Confident about having better squad this year, Punjab captain Adam Gilchrist said that he believes the team will do well in the sixth edition of the T20 Cricket League. "It's a new challenge now. We have got different set of players. In the last two seasons, we have been in running for semi-finals (berth) till (our) last game. We have strengthened the squad from last year," the 41 year old Gilchrist told a press conference here.

Gilchrist had earlier led Hyderabad to T20-League title in 2009 and was asked how he intends to resurrect the sagging fortunes of the KXIP, he replied,"There are plenty of options in the batting department including young Mandeep Singh, Paul Valthaty, Luke Pomersbach while presence of Parvinder Awana, Praveen Kumar, Manpreet Gony and Piyush Chawla strengthens the side's bowling."

Last year Gilchrist had indicated that he would bid adieu to T20-League as a player from the sixth edition. However, after talking to the team management, he decided to finish off as he still has one year of his contract left. Gilchrist had last season shouldered the responsibility of both the captain and the coach. But now, with the presence of Darren Lehman and WV Raman, he added, he will be looking forward to comeback as a player and and focus on that. "I am very excited and interested in enjoying a successful season."

McCullum, Pattinson to miss season opener for KKR........

Brendon McCullum attempts to hit out, Delhi Daredevils v Kolkata Knight Riders, 1st qualifier, IPL 2012, Pune, May 22, 2012

Defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders will miss the services of New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum and Australian fast bowler James Pattinson for the tournament opener against Delhi Daredevils on Wednesday. Both players are yet to join the squad, with McCullum recovering from a hamstring niggle in New Zealand while Pattinson is going through the rest period advised by Cricket Australia after the Test tour of India last month.
"Brendon is still at home as he is nursing a slight hamstring niggle. His reports are expected in the next 48 to 72 hours. There will be a further update on him once the reports are examined," the franchise stated in a release. Knight Riders play their second game on April 8.
Knight Riders would be more concerned about McCullum's fitness considering he is one of their key overseas batsmen. Last season, McCullum played 12 matches, scoring 289 runs including one half-century. But he bounced back by finishing among the top five batsmen at the ICC World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka last year. His fortunes swelled further after he was appointed New Zealand captain, replacing Ross Taylor in all forms. In the three-match T20 series, he was the second-highest runmaker behind team-mate Martin Guptill; he then finished on top of the run charts in the three-match ODI series. McCullum's most influential performance came during the drawn three-Test series. Coming in at No.6, McCullum played aggressive knocks, including three half-centuries, tofinish fourth in terms of runs.
Being in such dominant form, McCullum's presence would have boosted Knight Riders' confidence immensely especially since their captain Gautam Gambhir has been struggling for form while another senior batsman, the South African allrounder Jacques Kallis, is coming out of an injury. The franchise would like McCullum to be available for selection as soon as possible, considering his stint this season is a short one, since he is scheduled to depart after the first week of May to lead New Zealand on their tour of England.
England batsman Eoin Morgan, who was bought by the franchise in the 2011 auction for $350,000, was positive about his chances in case the team management wants him to fill in for McCullum. "There's enough depth and quality in our side if we have a look at just the list of overseas players. There's Kallis, Lee, McCullum, Sunil Narine… So it's really difficult if you are to make a way for yourself in the team. Yet, I need to keep looking forward and fight for a place in the final XI," Morgan said at the team's media conference on Monday.
Meanwhile, Pattinson is likely to join the squad on April 5. It is understood that he was held back on medical advice to give him some extra recovery time after the India tour. Pattinson played three matches in the four-Test series and fetched just nine wickets, but impressed with his ability to bowl long spells on unresponsive pitches.

Morgan's IPL high-wire act leaves England hanging.........

Eoin Morgan watches the ball after playing through the off side, Kolkata Knight Riders v Kings XI Punjab, IPL 2011, Kolkata, April 30, 2011

Because of a quirk of fate I'd rather not dwell upon, I found myself following the denouement of theAuckland Test from a cheap hotel in one of the less salubrious parts of Harrow. Don't be fooled by the public school on the hill, it can be a grim spot, especially when you are searching for a pint of decent real ale after a long drive.
It was a reminder of life without Sky TV and, dozing fitfully as England sought to bat out time, cursing that life had not entirely gone according to plan, I awoke occasionally to check the score in the closing session.
When not on ESPNcricinfo's ball-by-ball service, I kept abreast of things in Twitter. It can be rather disconcerting with nine wickets down to read 50 people screaming simultaneously 'Oh, Monty, what have you done!' without anybody thinking to attempt a spot of Neville Cardus in less than 140 characters and actually explaining what had happened, but I got the gist. I have such a wonderful mental image of that dive, I am reluctant to watch the real thing.
Anyway, England clung on and I fell asleep with the satisfying knowledge that after 15 days of Test cricket a 0-0 stalemate was a perfectly fitting conclusion. Not everybody gets it, but then not everybody needs to.
The first thing I wondered when I awoke the next morning was what did Eoin Morgan make of it all? Well, perhaps that was the second thing, after the usual issue of where the bathroom was. Was he entranced by England's heroic escape? Did he mutter that there was nothing to beat Test cricket? Was he consumed by dreams of making his own gloriously unexpected Ashes return this summer?
It would be a peculiar world if everybody was judged by their outpourings on Twitter, but that was where I had passed the early morning so I took a look. There were no tweets to be had on March 26 but on March 27, the day after the Test finished, he had his say. "IPL bound! No more training in the snow ," he tweeted and, if you took one look at the accompanying picture - Middlesex's practice bubble at Radlett as temperatures collapsed towards freezing - you had to admit he had a point.
In this spring of all springs, a merciless assault on the build-up to the English season, for a talented and ambitious England cricketer to slip off to IPL excited about the clamour that was about to unfold was perfectly understandable.
Morgan has been full of excitement again today: "Opening ceremony tonight. Pitbull and SRK performing. Should be awesome." He has told a pre-IPL gathering in Kolkata that India is a beautiful country with beautiful people and beautiful food. He even expressed a hope that he could learn to cook it. It is to be hoped that Kolkata Knight Riders will give him a few matches this time. Outside England, nobody quite understands how good he is.
But forget for a moment an English landscape cursed by rain and cold, a landscape in which the trees remain bare and the birds are fighting for survival (you did ask someone to replenish the bird feeder, Eoin?) and substitute an image of the first Ashes Test against Australia at Trent Bridge on July 10. If Morgan's IPL jaunt puts him entirely out of contention, is his decision as wise as it first appears?
Morgan has a clinical mind to rival any England player in history. He can appear as calculating off the field as on, seemingly always in control, measuring his sentences as coolly as he appraises a limited-overs run chase. He is not the sort to find himself in a Harrow guest house when he does not want to be. If he is at the IPL then you can be assured he has examined his options to the nth degree.
On the subject of the Ashes, though, I'm tempted to think he has got it wrong. His analysis has become a self-fulfilling prophecy. He repeatedly indicates that he would come back early to England if the selectors indicated that he was seriously in contention for the Test series against New Zealand and the Ashes to follow. But life is not like that if you are on the Test fringes. It is not England's job to give assurances, it is Morgan's job to make a case.
His positive comments in January caused a little media over-excitement. "I would like to be involved in the IPL again because I have learned a lot from it," he said. "But more so I want to be involved with England this summer. It is two Ashes series and it's what everyone dreams of. But if I am on the fringes things will have to be thought about quite deeply."

"Knowing Morgan, he will fancy he can find an unorthodox route into the Ashes. A successful IPL followed by a triumphant Champions Trophy would be a start"

Then he was not chosen for the New Zealand Test series, thought deeply and decided to throw in his lot with the IPL. Middlesex's managing director of cricket, Angus Fraser, would prefer him at Lord's - and so would England - but Morgan is centrally contracted and the EBC has issued no instructions for him to return early. And anyway, he only averaged 18 for Middlesex in the championship last season. He is a big-match player with a dubious Test technique. He needs to find another way.
Morgan has yet to play a Test against Australia and lost his No. 6 position after a series of failures against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates last year. Perhaps he regards his chances of an Ashes batting berth as slim. But he was selected for the Test tour of India before Christmas and those more highly favoured - the Yorkshire pair of Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow - have not made their case.
Root is the batsman in possession, but he averages 30 in four Tests and has not made a fifty since his staunch debut against India in Nagpur. He is undoubtedly a player for the future, but as yet he is a batsman of limited range and, as he blocked like a good 'un in England's backs-to-the-wall draw in Auckland, his range was restricting by the minute.
Without Morgan, unless Ravi Bopara suddenly returns to prominence, England will attempt to retain the Ashes with four defensive batsmen in the top six - Alastair Cook, Nick Compton, Jonathan Trott and Joe Root. It is to be hoped that Ian Bell does not go into his shell or England's batting, although potentially remorseless, will find it hard to seize the initiative. The danger is that they could allow Australia to bowl to them.
Knowing Morgan, he will fancy he can find an unorthodox route into the Ashes. A successful IPL followed by a triumphant Champions Trophy would be a start - as would be a deepening of England's uncertainty about who should bat at No. 6 when they face New Zealand in the two May Tests. There would be a precedent for him guesting for Somerset against Australia in a pre-Trent Bridge warm-up and, assuming he misses out at Trent Bridge, he has time to face Warwickshire at Uxbridge before the second Ashes Test.
It sounds too much like the best of both worlds. It would be a high-wire act audacious enough to impress Philippe Petit. It might well come to naught. But do not assume that Eoin Morgan has not already considered the percentages.

Gayle and Malinga take top honours......

There was no stopping Chris Gayle at the Kotla, Delhi Daredevils v Royal Challengers Bangalore, IPL 2012, Delhi
The IPL is now five seasons old, over which period 4931 innings have been played in 323 matches, but the best batting performance in these five seasons remains the one that was played by an opener in the first innings of the very first match of the competition. Brendon McCullum's unbeaten 158 off 73 balls for Kolkata Knight Riders, when he creamed 13 sixes off the hapless Royal Challengers Bangalore attack, remains at the top of the pile of best innings with 81.10 points, well clear of Sanath Jayasuriya's 114 off 48 in the same season for Mumbai Indians against Chennai Super Kings.
The top three innings are all hundreds, but the fourth one is a bit of a surprise: Harbhajan Singh's unbeaten 49 off 18 is fourth, but one look at the match scorecard and the context of his runs explains his high position: Harbhajan came in to bat at 119 for 7 in the 17th over, and blasted 49 to lift his team to 172; in reply, Deccan Chargers were bowled out for 131.
Virender Sehwag is the only player to feature three times in the top 15 - in third, eighth and 15th spots. Adam Gilchrist takes the fifth and sixth spots for innings of 85 (off 35) and 109 (off 47). Both these knocks were in identical chases, but the century came in an easier chase, when Gilchrist and VVS Laxman combined in an unbeaten first-wicket partnership of 155 against Mumbai Indians; his 85 came in a chase of 154, against Delhi Daredevils, but this time Chargers lost four wickets, and the second-highest score was only 24. Yusuf Pathan and Chris Gayle are the others to feature more than once.

The two best batting performances are from the 2008 season, and the two best bowling ones are from 2009. Anil Kumble leads the way, for his 5 for 5 against Rajasthan Royals in Cape Town in 2009. Amit Singh comes in in second place for his spell of 3 for 9 in a relatively high-scoring match against Kings XI Punjab in which 344 runs were scored in 40 overs. That's followed by Sohail Tanvir's 6 for 14 against Chennai Super Kings.
Because of a significant amount of weightage being given to the economy rates, some of the best performances in the table below are those in which bowlers have taken two or three wickets, but at very good economy rates. Rahul Sharma's 2 for 7 off four overs, for instance, came in a match against Mumbai Indians in which 299 runs were scored in 40 overs, and no other bowler went at less than five runs per over. Similarly, Lasith Malinga (3 for 9 versus Deccan Chargers) and Dale Steyn (3 for 8 against Royal Challengers make it to the top ten because of their economy rates as well.

In terms of overall numbers, there's no doubt regarding the best batsman in all IPL seasons put together. Six batsmen have scored more runs than Gayle, but none as been as consistently destructive as Gayle: over 42 innings, he averages 50.11 at a strike rate of almost 162. He is also the only batsman to score three hundreds, and was Player of the Tournament in 2011. Gayle's 12 Man-of-the-Match awards are the joint-highest in all IPL matches - he shares the record with Yusuf Pathan.
Averaging out the rating points for all batsmen, Gayle's average score of 24.30 is about 20% better than the next-best, Shaun Marsh's 20.11. Marsh is one of three Australians who occupy the slots immediately after the top position, while Indian batsmen dominate the rest of the top ten, with five of them in the next six. Sehwag is marginally ahead of Sachin Tendulkar, while Suresh Raina and MS Dhoni round off the top ten.

Not only is Malinga the leading wicket-taker in IPL, he also has the best average points (calculated by averaging out his points for every IPL bowling performance). Malinga is a couple of points clear of Muttiah Muralitharan, who is in second place. The rest of the top ten is bunched together very closely, with less than three points separating the second-ranked Muralitharan from the tenth-ranked Ashish Nehra.

Salient points about the performance analysis methodology
  • Each batting and bowling performance by every player in the IPL gets a score, based on the runs scored and the strike rate, or the wickets taken and the economy rate.
  • The batting position is factored in, since it's easier for a top-order batsman to score more runs in a limited-overs format.
  • The batting strike rate is weighed against the scoring rate in the match. Thus, runs scored in a high-scoring match counts for less than the same runs scored in a low-scoring game. A similar logic holds for the economy rates for bowlers. However, extra points are given for runs made when batting second in a high run-chase.
  • For bowlers, top-order wickets count for more than tail-end wickets.
  • Bowlers who bowl their full quota of four overs get full value for their performance, compared to those who bowl only a fraction of their four-over quota.

'Time to play fearless cricket' - Gambhir.......

Kolkata Knight Riders captain Gautam Gambhir has asked his side to play "fearless cricket," ahead of the opening game of the IPL 2013 season, against Delhi Daredevils at Eden Gardens. Knight Riders are the defending champions, having won the title in 2012 after several poor seasons.
"We've got the monkey off our back. Now is the time to go out there and play fearless cricket," Gambhir said on the eve of the match. He said Knight Riders would not be affected by Brendon McCullum's absence, after the New Zealand batsman suffered a hamstring problem, saying there was "a lot of quality in the dressing room".
Gambhir also said his focus was on performing for his franchise and insisted the IPL was not just a comeback platform for the national side. He had been dropped for the first two Tests against Australia and then missed out on selection for the next two Tests due to an illness. "I don't play for individuals but for a team called KKR," Gambhir said. "I am a part of the team which is the defending champion. I don't see IPL as my comeback platform."
Daredevils team mentor TA Sekar was happy with the performances that Irfan Pathan and Yadav had shown in a few matches prior to the IPL. Yadav picked up a five-wicket haul against Odisha in a domestic T20 tournament recently, while Irfan also got his fitness back. "I think bowlers today are very intelligent and they know how to keep themselves fit," Sekar said, adding that McCullum's absence had leveled the playing field between the teams.
Delhi Daredevils' coach Eric Simons was happy with the fitness of his bowlers ahead of the game against Knight Riders. "There are a few teams who are struggling with injuries," Simons said. "But one of the positives is that they are coming from an injury lay-off and they all are fresh. Umesh Yadav bowled really well at the nets. Hopefully that`s something that would go in our favour."
While admitting the absence of Kevin Pietersen and Jesse Ryder was disappointing, Simons said he was happy with the trade that brought in Ashish Nehra in place of New Zealand's Ross Taylor.
"This year there`s a lot of innovation in the team selection," Simons said. "We have more options, having learnt the lessons. We have traded well. We have got a lot of variations now."

Watson key for Rajasthan Royals.........

Watson key for Rajasthan Royals
New Delhi: The Rajasthan Royals won the inaugural edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008, but they have not been able to match their performance in the next four editions.

After a decent start to the 2012 edition, they ended up losing more matches than they won. However, captain Rahul Dravid and Ajinkya Rahane, surprisingly, came out as a successful opening pair providing good starts for the team in most matches.

With the purchase of Aussie James Faulkner, Sri Lanka`s Kusal Perera and West Indian Fidel Edwards, the Jaipur-based team can look forward to test the best sides in the tourney.

One must not forget Shane Watson, who was the player of the tournament in 2008, who will be available for the entire 2013 season and will be a player to watch out for. Much is also expected from slow chinaman bowler Brad Hogg, who at 42, is the oldest player in the tournament.

New recruits: James Faulkner, Fidel Edwards, Kushal Perera, Harmeet Singh, Sachin Baby, Rahul Shukla and Sanju Samson.

Players to watch out for: Rahul Dravid, Ajinkya Rahane, Shane Watson, Bradley Hodge.

The squad: Rahul Dravid, Shane Watson, Shaun Tait, Bradley Hodge, Brad Hogg, Kevon Cooper, Owais Shah, S. Sreesanth, Ajinkya Rahane, Ashok Menaria, Stuart Binny, Siddharth Trivedi, Ankeet Chavan, Dishant Yagnik, Shreevats Goswami, Ajith Chandila, Samuel Badree, Harmeet Singh, James Faulkner, Fidel Edwards, Kushal Perera, Sachin Baby, Sanju Samson, Rahul Shukla, Pravin Tambe.

Devil may care Delhi look to proving point.......

Devil may care Delhi look to proving point
New Delhi: Delhi have always had a strong squad in Indian Premier League and have reached the semi-finals thrice (2008, 2009, and 2012) - but on all occasions Delhi Daredevils have faltered in the end and failed to make it to the finals on all three occasions.

Their worst performance was when they finished last in 2011 winning just four of their 14 matches. The only other time they have failed to be in the top four was when they finished fifth in 2010.

Led by a new commander in Mahela Jayawardene, Delhi Daredevils would look to right the wrongs and go the full distance in the tournament`s sixth edition.

The biggest strength of this team is their top batting and bowling line-up. With batsmen like David Warner, Virender Sehwag and Mahela Jayawardene, the Daredevils are capable of taking on any bowling. With Morne Morkel, Varun Aaron and Umesh Yadav in their ranks, Delhi have one of the most fearsome pace battery.

Delhi Daredevils will have to avoid complacency, they have always done well in the group stages but they have been awful in the knockouts. Kevin Pietersen will be a big miss and if another of the big three gets injured, Delhi will be in a fix.

New recruits: Johan Botha, Jesse Ryder, Jeevan Mendis.

Players to watch out for: Virender Sehwag, David Warner, Mahela Jayawardene, Unmukt Chand, Morne Morkel and Umesh Yadav.

Squad: Ajit Agarkar, Andre Russell, Arisht Singhvi, Ashish Nehra, CM Gautam, David Warner, Gulam Bodi, Irfan Pathan, Jeevan Mendis, Jesse Ryder, Johan Botha, Kedar Jadhav, Kevin Pietersen, Mahela Jayawardene, Manpreet Juneja, Morne Morkel, Naman Ojha, Pawan Negi, Roelof Van Der Merwe, Royston Dias, Siddarth Kaul, Sujit Nayak, Shahbaz Nadeem, Umesh Yadav, Unmukt Chand, Varun Aaron, Venugopal Rao, Virender Sehwag, Yogesh Nagar.

North Korea on ‘collision course’: UN chief.......

Geneva: United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday warned that North Korea appeared to be on a collision course with the international community and that could lead to war.

Ban said in Andorra that “the current crisis has already gone too far” because of rising tensions following North Korea’s daily threats of war. The targets of these threats have been the United States and South Korea. The UN chief said international negotiations are urgently needed but he is “convinced that no one intends to attack” North Korea.

Pyongyang has sought disarmament-for-aid talks with Washington and more domestic loyalty by portraying North Korean leader Kim Jong-un as a powerful commander.

Jesse Ryder unable to recall Bar assault.........

Jesse Ryder unable to recall Bar assault
Wellington: New Zealand cricketer Jesse Ryder was interviewed by the Police on Tuesday in relation to the attack that left him fighting for life.

However, Ryder was unable to recall the incident or the events leading up to it.‘Unfortunately Mr Ryder has no recollection of what took place or the events leading up to the incident," Police Detective Brian Archer was quoted as saying by stuff.co.nz on Tuesday.

Archer attributed it to the injuries Ryder suffered after being attacked outside a bar in Christchurch last week.

He said that the police will speak to him again after he regains fitness and is able to remember the attack. However, they are in no mood to question him soon.

"Should Mr Ryder gain sufficient recollection as his recovery continues then we may look to speak to him again, however there are no immediate plans to re-interview him at this time,’’ he was quoted as saying.
