Tour Game: India A acted against the spirit of the game?.......

Chennai: The three-day practice game between India A and Australia avoided a controversy despite the hosts acting against the spirit of the game while running out a batsman during the final day of the fixture.

During the 48th over of the Australian innings, Peter Siddle flicked left-arm spinner Rakesh Dhurv to midwicket fence and set off for a run. Manpreet Singh Gony threw the ball back at the non-striker’s end after the ball had reportedly bounced off the rope. Siddle was going for the third run when the throw came in.

He was caught short and the India A fielders started celebrating the wicket. According to DNA, Gony had even crossed the boundary line while fielding the ball but still went ahead with the throw.

The on-field umpire reportedly asked Gony about the clearance but he refused to acknowledge that the ball had touched the rope.

Amid the confusion, the umpire referred the decision to the match referee who in the absence of cameras had to adjudge Siddle run out. The visitors didn’t object to the development and consequently a controversy was avoided.
