Sports ministry’s intervention ends drama over India’s participation in Azlan Shah
New Delhi: The sports ministry, on Tuesday, overruled the Sports Authority of India's decision not to clear Indian men hockey team's trip to the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup with a stern warning to Hockey India (HI) not to overshoot its budget in future.

The sports ministry's decision came minutes after HI withdrew the team from the 22nd edition of the tournament after the SAI refused to pick the airfare tab for the tournament to be held in Ipoh, Malaysia March 9-17.

Sports secretary Pradip Kumar Deb said that the ministry has cleared the trip after the case was forwarded by SAI, which had refused to sanction the trip citing budget issues.

"We have an annual budget of Rs.5.94 crores for Hockey India, but they crossed it and we have already spent Rs.11.27 crores. So SAI didn't clear the case and forwarded it to us. I have cleared the trip since Sultan Azlan Shah Cup is a top tournament and the team will get good exposure," said Deb.

"But we have warned HI that in future they should not cross the budget," he added.

HI said SAI has made it clear that the men's team will play the tournament at no cost to government.

"Hockey India has been forced to withdraw its participation from the tournament. Government has always covered the airfare of the team for this tournament till date," HI said in a statement.

India are five-time champions in the tournament. They finished third in the last edition in 2012 and were joint winners in 2010 with South Korea. They were winners in 2009 as well.

The tournament will provide India the much needed exposure of playing against higher-ranked teams like Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan and Korea.

Earlier this month, HI selectors and government observer had announced the team that would be led by Danish Mujtaba. The team is undergoing training here with the prior sanction of the SAI.

The Sultan Azlan Shah Cup Hockey Tournament is an A-Grade tournament sanctioned by the International Hockey Federation (FIH).

No entry to Imran Khan`s new house.........

No entry to Imran Khan`s new house
New Delhi: Imran Khan has been snowed under with requests from architects and interior design magazines ever since he got his ancestral home renovated -- however, the actor is not keen to let anyone enter his private pad.

Imran`s house in Pali Hill, Mumbai, belonged to his grandfather, late filmmaker Nasir Hussain, and it has been there for the past 50 years. The house is eco-friendly with interesting aspects like solar panels, water harvesting and perfect ventilation.

It took nearly two years for the renovation to be completed and the actor moved into the home only last month. Ever since, he has been flooded with requests from magazines, which are keen to profile Imran on their cover, but he isn`t keen on it.

The 30-year-old, recently seen in ‘Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola’, is not ready to budge.

"Imran has as of now given a blanket `no` to all the magazines who have got in touch with him to cover his house. He wants his house to be his den and does not want to share his space," said a source close to the actor.

Not ashamed of Parliament attack: Afzal letter.....

Srinagar: Parliament attack convict Mohammad Afzal Guru had in a letter purportedly written by him over four years ago said that there was no need to be ashamed of the December 13 attack on Parliament, but had stopped short of owning any responsibility for it.

In the letter written to editor of a local Urdu weekly, Guru, who was hanged in Delhi's Tihar jail on February 9, asked Hizbul Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin not to be "ashamed of December 13" and stop terming the attack as a "conspiracy".

Editor of the Urdu weekly Shabnum Qayoom said that he has been receiving Guru's letters and articles and is sure that this letter was written by him.

"I used to receive his (Guru's) letters and articles, so this was nothing new. The handwriting is the same as the previous letters and articles. I do not care if people believe it to be authentic or not," he said.

Asked why he did not publish the letter for four years, he said he did not deem it appropriate.

"I believe he was swept by emotions. He was not involved but he thought that as there was no way for escape, why not accept and achieve martyrdom. I did not think it was appropriate to publish the letter that time as it would might been taken as an evidence against him, but now that he is no more, I went ahead with it," he said.

Guru had said in the letter, "I request Salahuddin to not call the attack of December 13 as a conspiracy. It pains my heart. The attacks are related to Kashmir issue. If the attack was a conspiracy, then the whole struggle is a conspiracy. We should not be ashamed of December 13".

He said as long as the Kashmir issue is kept unresolved, India and its rulers will have "temporary peace".

Bomb blast in Manipur, one jawan killed......

Imphal: In the first major attack on Army personnel this year in Manipur, insurgents on Tuesday exploded a powerful remote-controlled bomb, killing one jawan and injuring three others in interior Churachandpur district.

The banned Peoples Liberation Army (PLA) claimed responsibility of the attack, officials said.

The bomb, attached to a roadside culvert, went off at about 6.40 am when personnel of Gorkha Rifles were on patrol duty in the area. A sniffer dog of the Army was also killed in the blast, they said.

The dead jawan was identified as Kailash and the injured as Lance Naik Sushil Kumar, Amit Tamang and Raj Bahadur. The condition of the injured was serious, the officials said.

Soon after the incident, security personnel cordoned off the area and launched a search operation.

However, no arrest has been made so far, the officials said, adding that the attackers used the jungle and hilly terrain to their advantage and managed to flee.

In another incident, a powerful bomb planted near the office of the Border Road Task Force at Lamphel area in Imphal West district was recovered during the day and was later defused, they said.

Did Shah Rukh Khan avoid Salman Khan?......

Did Shah Rukh Khan avoid Salman Khan?
Mumbai: As if we haven’t had enough of the Salman Khan-Shah Rukh Khan enmity stories, here’s yet another episode to their age-old rivarly.

Reportedly, Salman, the owner of Mumbai Heroes had sent an invite to his arch rival SRK to take part in the Celebrity Cricket league match. But King Khan chose to give a royal ignore to his arch rival’s invitation and instead made his presence felt at the University Cricket Championship.

“I personally wont get time to play cricket so I don`t think I will be attached to anything else but if it requires me.. I think there are so many stars in CCL, I don`t think they need a smaller star like me,” SRK said.

With the cold-vibes only growing stronger with time, we wonder if the two warring Khans will ever call a ceasefire!

Railway Budget 2013: Railway stocks derail, see losses of up to 16%....

Mumbai: Share prices of companies that cater to the railway sector like Stone India, Kernex Microsystems and Kalindee Rail tanked by as much as 16 percent in the absence of big ticket announcements in the Rail Budget on Tuesday.

Rail Budget 2013: Between the lines for Aam Aadmi

Railway Minister P K Bansal, the first Congress Minister to present Railway Budget in 17 years, failed to enthuse investors and railway-related stocks witnessed heavy selling.

Stone India was the largest loser and dropped by 16.21 percent on BSE, followed by Kernex Microsystems (15.13 percent) and Kalindee Rail Nirman (11.62 percent).

Among others, Texmaco Rail tanked by 11.36 percent, Hind Rectifiers was down 8.82 percent, Titagarh Wagons lost 8.14 percent and BEML fell by 2.80 percent.

"Overall neutral to positive budget as passenger fare and freight targets look reasonable and commensurate with the current growth rate. Reasonable allocations towards building of iron-ore and coal infrastructure. Market was expecting a marginal hike in passenger fare which did not come through," Aditya Birla Money Head of Research Vivek Mahajan said.

The Railway Minister today said that the railways will give a greater focus on safety devices -- anti-collision devices, automatic fire & smoke detection system among others.

Accordingly, the stocks of those companies which cater the security segment ended the day with gains defying the tepid broader market sentiment. Zicom Electronics was up 4.24 percent.

Commercial Engineers and Body Builders (CEBBCO) rose 1.41 percent and Container Corporation (Concor) was up 2.23 percent were also gainers.

Meanwhile, Railways is expected to fall short of targeted revenues by as much as Rs 7,491.66 crore mainly due to lower passenger and freight earnings.

As per official data, Railways is projected to see gross receipts Rs 1.28 lakh crore for the fiscal ending March 31, 2013, compared to the budget estimate of Rs 1.35 lakh crore.

It is expected that shortfall in revenue mobilisation, both from passenger and freight movement, will be to the tune of Rs 3,573 crore and Rs 3,383 crore respectively as compared to the Budget estimates for 2012-13.

Clarke refuses to blame pitch after debacle......

Australian skipper Michael Clarke was candid in his assessment of his side's eight-wicket defeat against India in the Chennai Test.

The visitors were outplayed on a turning pitch where R Ashwin bagged 12 wickets and MS Dhoni scored an outstanding double hundred. Virat Kohli's fourth hundred only added to Australia's misery. However, despite all the talk of how much the pitch aided the Indian spinners, Clarke was not the one to use that as an excuse for a poor performance.

"I don't think we bowled well enough in our first innings, and we certainly didn't bat well enough in our second innings," Clarke said after the Test finished inside the first session on Day 5.

The Aussie skipper, who scored a gritty hundred in the first innings to help Australia post a healthy 380, did not believe he had missed a trick by not including a second specialist spinner in the team - India looked vulnerable at one point on Day 3 when Nathan Lyon got the ball to turn sharply off the pitch and even removed Sachin Tendulkar. But the lack of back-up for the off-spinner allowed the hosts to build on a brilliant partnership between Dhoni and Kohli, a stand that took the game away from the Aussies.

"It's not just about selection. It's about how you perform." said Clarke.

"There were areas in the Indian team we didn't attack enough," explained Clarke, adding, "If we'd got 150 or 200 on the board (in the second innings), we might have been able to expose, or at least see how they played on a deteriorating wicket."

Clarke was gracious enough to accept that India were the better team, saying the hosts played outstanding cricket and they deserved the victory.

"A lot of credit has to go to India," said Clarke.

Besides the skipper himself and debutante Moises Henriques, who scored 68 and 81 not out, the other batsmen failed and that did seem to bother Clarke but he was still not convinced about a change in the batting order.

Didn't change my game despite criticism......

MS Dhoni has been in the firing line, especially after losing the Test series to England at home but he reacted by ignoring all the criticism.

The Indian captain shut all his critics up with a sensational double hundred against Australia in the opening Test in Chennai. His 224 ensured India ended up with a 192-run lead, which buried the Aussies as they collapsed to an eight-wicket defeat.

"What really matters is the job I'm trying to do. The best thing I've done so far is to not watch the news or read the newspapers, so that has really helped, frankly," Dhoni said at the post-match press conference.

"It's not that I do not read newspapers, it's just that the third page from the back is always the sports page, so you try to get rid of that. Otherwise you don't get to know what's happening in India," said Dhoni.

Despite all the criticism, Dhoni held firm and did not change his methods in the middle, including his batting style.

"Nothing has changed. Whatever is your specialty remains your specialty," he said.

Government ducks passenger fare hike in Railway Budget.....

New Delhi: An eye on general elections next year, Pawan Kumar Bansal's Rail Budget today did not raise passenger fares today, but he introduced a nearly six per cent hike in freight traffic rates and additional charges on ticketing services and some passenger tickets, mostly for wealthier passengers.

The BJP and the Left have slammed it as a "populist election budget" that has "hidden costs"; Mayawati, whose support holds up the Manmohan Singh government, said she was dismayed that, "Fare has been hiked through the back door."

The increase in supplementary charges for superfast trains, like Rajdhanis and Shatabdis, and charges on reservations and cancellations will mean a fare increase of between Rs. 5 and Rs. 25 for all classes in superfast trains.

The hike in freight tariff and the hike in supplementary charges are expected to generate additional revenue of Rs. 4,683 crore for the Railways in the next fiscal year. The Railway Minster, presenting his maiden Railway Budget and the first by a Congressman in 17 years, emphasised that the Railways is staring at losses of Rs. 24,000 crore this year.

In a speech made lively by poetry and verse, the minister put forth flat statistics to say that unless the Railways cuts losses and begins to make money, it cannot provide best value to customers and play its part in the nation's growth effectively. "Indian Railways must remain financially sustainable. The number of passenger trains has increased from 8,000 in 2001 to over 12,000 in 2012, yet losses continue to mount," Mr Bansal said, adding that scarcity of resources and a thin spread of funds continued to be a problem.

Mr Bansal said he had to raise Rs. 95,000 crore in the next four years of the 12th Five-Year Plan, which called for setting higher targets for expanding the rail network.

Passenger fares were raised by 21 per cent last month, but a significant part of the expected additional revenue of about Rs. 6,000 crore was wiped out by the increase in the price of diesel. Mr Bansal said the fuel surcharge he was imposing on freight was aimed at meeting the increased fuel bill. The Railways would absorb the Rs.850-crore loss from no passenger fare hike, he said. He also announced 67 new express and 26 passenger trains.

Global brokerage Nomura has said that while linking freight to fuel costs is the right move, subsidized passenger fares account for the bulk of rail losses and until that is addressed, the financial position of the Railways is unlikely to turn around quickly.

The Rail Budget is closely watched, both by the millions of Indians who use it every day and see cheap rail travel as a right, and by economists looking to see how far the government will be willing to go to tackle politically sensitive reforms.

India Inc's reactions ranged from positive to disappointment. "We expected the Budget to be more constructive, but I think the minister was under restrictions... there is no major impetus to growth," Ashok Vijay, chief financial officer at Texmaco, the largest wagon maker in the country, said.

However, industry body Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry said it welcomed the Railway Ministry's thrust on safety and fiscal discipline. As part of new safety measures, Mr Bansal today announced that new coaches with anti-climb features will be brought in; over 10,000 level crossings will be eliminated and 17 bridges have been sanctioned for rehabilitation.

To generate additional revenue, Mr Bansal has proposed public private partnerships in building the exclusive railway freight corridors across the country to decongest passenger traffic and improve its transportation services which have been steadily losing ground to roads.

For the stock markets, the Budget was pretty much a non-event. The BSE Sensex slipped below the key 19,000 mark, while the broader Nifty traded below 5,750 amid a huge selloff, but traders attributed the selloff to widespread profit-taking in blue chips ahead of the Union Budget 2013-14 and weak global cues.

MIRCHI-one of the Top 7 grossers in USA

Mirchi has become big blockbuster in USA and has found itself a place in one of the Top 7 grossers in USA

ASHWIN RECORD.........

Yes, he may not be considered better than the other 3.
Yes, he may have taken most of the wickets on rank turners.
Yes, he may have taken many of the wickets against NZ and WI.

But, there is no denying, that Ashwin, after 13 matches, has taken many more wickets than the other 3, out of which 2 are for sure considered to be the Greatest Spinners of All Time...

The question then is, will he be able to perform like this consistently?
However, the answer to that, may only lie in the hands of time...

Till then #MassiveRespect. for Ashwin.

I really pity Dhoni’s critics: Shastri.....

Much of the one on one had to do with India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

You’re a double centurion yourself. What does it take to score a double hundred in Test cricket?

A It tests everything... Your character, skill, technique, stamina... Your ability as a performer at the highest level is put to a massive test.

Some words on Dhoni’s innings (batting on 206) at the Chepauk...

Dhoni’s scripted one of the greatest innings by an Indian... I’d even say his double century will rank among the finest by any captain anywhere... The way he counter-attacked the second new ball, in particular, was superb... To score over 200 runs in less than a day is just fantastic.

Where would you place Dhoni’s innings vis-a-vis other captain’s knocks by Indians?

As I’ve said, among the best anywhere, not just in the Indian context.

What stood out?

Many things, considering India were in trouble when he walked in (196 for four)... It was humid, the wicket wasn’t easy... He read the situation very well and counter-attacked when the second new ball was taken.

Dhoni triggered mayhem, but remained calm himself...

That’s his style.

Will this innings silence Dhoni’s critics?

I really pity Dhoni’s critics, that’s all I’ll say... Dhoni’s in the same bracket as Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid. His contribution to Indian cricket has been that awesome. To repeat, Dhoni has done more than what many would do in a lifetime.

Sachin's super sixes.......

Scorecard | Final day's report | Spin debate alive

Super sixes

Only once had Sachin Tendulkar begun a Test innings with a six: when he crunched Muttiah Muralitharan back over his head and out of the stadium first ball at Nagpur in 1997. On Tuesday, the maestro went one better, wading into Nathan Lyon’s off-spin for two massive strikes over long-on on the first two deliveries. Another hit for maximum would have won the match in style, but that wasn’t to be and it was left to Cheteshwar Pujara to stroke the winning run. Tendulkar though made what is possibly his last Test appearance at Chepauk a memorable one for those who turned up.

India surge into series lead.....

The hosts complete an eight-wicket win over Australia at Chepauk.

Captain Cool: MS Dhoni was declared Man of the Match for his swashbuckling 224 in the first Test.

Scorecard | Dhoni equals Ganguly's record | The easiest job A day to remember
CHENNAI: The formality of last rites was performed as a matter of course on Tuesday morning as India took a one-nil lead in the four-Test series against Australia. The visitors, gasping for life overnight, breathed their last nine overs into the morning and set India a victory target of 50, which was achieved by the home team for the loss of a their openers. No surprises there!

Clarke says India completely 'outplayed' Australia

What was surprising was Sachin Tendulkar – walking out at the fall of Virender Sehwag with 14 needed – clubbing sixes against the unfortunate Nathan Lyon off the first two balls he faced. If the dutiful crowd that had turned up needed anything to sweeten an already saccharine victory, it was the two mega hits from the blade of the master.

It was a grand beginning to the series, the opening match having been enlivened by MS Dhoni’s dizzying double-hundred on the third day and off-spinner R. Ashwin’s 12 wickets at his home ground - all on a crumbling, disintegrating pitch; but India will graciously accept the result after a tumultuous home season the previous year.
