The Supreme Court will hear YSR Congress leader Jagan Mohan Reddy's bail plea today. Mr Reddy was arrested on corruption charges on May 27, 2012 and has been lodged at the Chanchalguda Jail for almost a year now.
This is Mr Reddy's sixth attempt at getting bail. His last plea was rejected by the top court on October 5, 2012. In its order that day, the Supreme Court asked the Central Bureau of Investigation or CBI to file a consolidated charge sheet against Mr Reddy. The CBI has so far filed five different charge sheets against Mr Reddy, charging him with entering into a criminal conspiracy with his late father and former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YSR Reddy to dole out favours to companies and individuals who made investments in his businesses.
Several ministers, who also served in YSR Reddy's cabinet, and officials are also under the CBI's scanner for allegedly issuing controversial orders, allotting land, granting mining licenses and other favours to various companies promoted by Jagan Mohan Reddy.
