Sanjay Dutt doesn't deserve this, says Bollywood

Mumbai: People from the Hindi film fraternity took to Twitter to express their views on the Supreme Court’s verdict, Thursday, upholding the conviction of actor Sanjay Dutt and sending him to five years imprisonment.
Dutt, who was convicted under the Arms Act for illegally possessing a 9mm pistol and an AK-56 rifle, had been awarded six years imprisonment by the TADA (Terrorists and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act) court. As Dutt has already spent 18 months in jail, he will now have to spend another three and a half years in jail. 

Reacting strongly in favour of Dutt, filmmaker Kunal Kohli wrote, “the real planners of the `93 blasts are sitting safely in Pakistan,till they are brought to book, justice will not be served. the `93 blast case should NOT be made about Sanjay Dutt.The Real planners are sitting safely in Pakistan like Osama Bin Laden was. The way america caught Osama Bin Laden,we need to do a similar operation if Pak doesn`t hand over the `93 blast masterminds living there (sic).”

Music director Vishal Dadlani expressed solidarity with Dutt and tweeted, “I stand with @duttsanjay , always will. He`s my brother. He made mistakes, but he`s served more than his time, in terms of mental stress. I am not contesting/denying the law, but it breaks my heart that @duttsanjay `s to face this.He has done so much, so selflessly for so many! When I barely knew him, I needed some personal help in a family matter. I just asked, and @duttsanjay went above and beyond duty, to help. HE called ME (remember, I barely knew him then), EVERYDAY till it was sorted. Made things happen. Wish ppl could know how many he`s helped. (sic).”

“Heart Broken: Just heard that Sanjay Dutt has to go to jail for 5 years. I expected mercy! Alas it did not happen (sic),” veteran filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt tweeted. 

Director-producer Karan Johar wrote, “I am truly shattered to hear of Sanju`s sentence...the nicest guy i have known just doesnt deserve this...my heart goes out to him....(sic).”

Veteran actress Poonam Dhillon wrote, “@duttsanjay My Heart Goes out to Sanju.U are a Good Hearted ,Good Human Being ..May ur problems dissapear soon..Luv & Prayers (sic).”

Music director Shekhar Ravjiani wrote, “He's the most loved person in the business. One of the nicest people I know. Man with a big heart. My brother. I m with u @duttsanjay (sic).”

Jewelry designer Farah Khan Ali wrote, “Sanjay Dutt is a very good Man who doesn't deserve this sentence. God give him the strength. Prayers and more with his family (sic).”

Singer Shweta Pandit tweeted, “All i can say is @duttsanjay is indeed one of the most loving & nicer people i've met in the industry. This sentence is just too harsh! (sic).”

Photographer Dabboo Ratnani wrote, “Shattered to Hear about @duttsanjay ...Love Him...He is Like My Elder Brother & has a Pure Heart of Gold. God give Him Strength #SanjayDutt (sic).”

Producer Pritish Nandy reacted strongly and wrote, “Sad for Sanjay Dutt. He is paying for what was an act of folly. He is no traitor. He made a mistake. He is paying for it. Hugely. The real conspirators of the Bombay blasts must be brought back to India and tried. Sanjay's trial is just part of collateral damage (sic).”

Actor Aftab Shivdasani wrote, “Sad to know the verdict on Sanjay Dutt, my heart goes out to him and his family..he was a fighter, is one and will always be one..(sic).”

Dutt’s ‘Munnabhai’ co-star Arshad Warsi tweeted, “I am numb, I don't know what to say. Sanjay Dutt is not a criminal. This is too harsh a decision (sic).”

Bipasha Basu tweeted, “Saddenned n shocked with the news about Sanjay Dutt's Jail sentence. Strength to him n his family (sic).”

Co-star Ameesha Patel tweeted, “Feeling an awful pit in my stomach at sanjus judgement..he is a sweetheart..hope a miracle happens n saves him (sic).”

Dutt’s ‘Agneepath co-star Hrithik Roshan wrote, “I cannot comprehend. I know d law is d LAW. But I can bet my Life 2 say that Sanju sir doesn't deserve this! D most loved man!i stand for Sanjay dutt (sic).”

Neil Nitin Mukesh tweeted, “Just heard about sanjay sir. I am so upset with the news. One of the finest people around. He deserves Love !!NOT THIS (sic).” 

‘Aatma’ review: It 'scares' you with intelligent horror! ....

Thanks to ‘Aatma’ - the brainchild of director, screenplay and story writer Suparn Verma, Hindi cinema can now heave a sigh of relief after years of being pulled up for its stereotypical ‘scary’ films belonging to the supernatural genre.

After going through the one-and-half-hour-long movie, it turns out that the makers of ‘Aatma’ have kept their promise of presenting a freshly baked horror film with pleasant surprises thrown in here and there on the audiences’ platter. So here you won’t find the baggage that comes with the ‘usual’ horror films.

The story is kept real and believable and here’s how it goes: Maya Verma (Bipasha Basu) is trying hard to start her life afresh after the accidental death of her violent husband Abhay (Nawazuddin Siddique) who she got legally separated with after an unsuccessful marriage of 7 years. Now, as the story moves forward, Maya’s stream of consciousness reveals that Abhay was a husband from hell but a doting yet an overtly possessive father to his little daughter Nia (Doyel Dhawan). Nia’s affection for her father brings him back from the dead which results in hell breaking loose in Maya’s life. And this time the father is determined to take his daughter away with him to the netherworld. Now the only thing posing as a roadblock for the demoniac soul of Abhay is the strong mother-daughter bond that Nia and Maya share. This sets the base of ‘Aatma’s story. Now the question is, will the powerful and undefeatable evil Abhay have his way or will Maya’s motherly love win over the evil? Don’t rack your brains over this dear readers, simply go and watch the film (if you love the horror genre).

As the film’s writer, Suparn Verma had tried to make sure that he leaves no stone unturned in making the film connect on a logical and emotional level. For instance, one may question the logic behind the evil spirit going about killing every person that came its way in the film except Bipasha’s character but the reason behind that manoeuvre is revealed as the story progresses. But that does not imply that ‘Aatma’ is an excellent film. Rather it is more apt to say that it is an out-of-the-box film. The scary moments before the interval are more like foreplay. They titillate the viewer before the main course is served in the second half of the film with creativity flowing in the thrilling scenes. There are a couple of sequences that will give you the goose bumps while there are a few that will make you look into the screen without batting an eyelid. However, the best is preserved for the last – the climax! 

The actors, on their part, have done whatever they could to make the movie appealing. A special word of praise for Nawazuddin Siddique – he plays the part of a demoniac soul like a pro but he looks equally vicious and real as a man hurling domestic abuses on his wife. Bipasha’s best moment in the film comes during the climax. Otherwise, her performance remains steady throughout. The baby faced Doyel Dhawan looks promising as a child artist. The supporting cast has acted fine but it was amusing to watch a mystery woman draped in black appear out of nowhere to shout about an omen (talk about stereotypes here). 

Of the few songs it has, ‘Aaja Nindiya’, a lullaby well sung by Sangeet Haldipur. It stands out for its slow, melodious and on top of that, spooky notes. The music playing in the background has subtle tones and thankfully, there are no songs to break the film’s pace abruptly. Also, the way camera angles have been smartly used to project the supernatural happenings can be rightly termed as intelligent horror.

On a general note, ‘Aatma’ does not belong to the league of those horror films that leave a powerful impact on your mind for days, read: ‘The Exorcist’, ‘Grudge’ recalling a few. Instead, hopefully it will leave you without any fear of the unknown lurking in your heart. Signing off on an optimistic note, ‘Aatma 2’ takes the genre of horror films a notch higher.

Gang-rape case: Delhi HC allows media to cover day-to-day trial...

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Friday gave permission to the media to cover the day-to-day trial of December 16 gang-rape case that shook the nation. 

The gang-raped 23-year-old physiotherapy intern died on December 29 in a Singapore hospital, where she was taken from Safdarjung Hospital for treatment. 

Justice Rajiv Shakdher, allowing the plea of journalists seeking open trial instead of an in-camera one, directed the fast-track court to allow access to one representative of each media house. 

"The court will allow access to one representative journalist of each of the accredited national dailies. The petitioners before me represent some of them," the order said. 

The court, however, imposed some restrictions on the media, saying it would not disclose the name of the victim or her family members or witnesses cited during the trial. 

The reporters will exclude parts of proceedings that the court instructs them not to report, Justice Shakdher said, setting aside the media advisory issued by the police not to report the court proceedings and order of the trial court. 

"At the end, it is hoped that reportage will confine itself to the news as it is, and not transgress into the areas which are in the domain of the court. There is a thin, but a clean and distinct, line dividing the two which, if respected, will augur well for institutional integrity," the order added. 

On January 07, the fast-track trial court had ordered in-camera trial of the gang-rape-cum-murder case following unruly scenes that prevented the accused from being led into court. It also told the media not to report any news related to the case without its permission. 

The proceedings have been abated against prime accused Ram Singh as he is dead.

The other four accused in the case are Ram Singh's brother Mukesh, fruit seller Pawan Gupta, gym instructor Vinay Sharma and bus cleaner Akshay Thakur. 

The sixth accused is a juvenile, lodged separately, and his case is being heard by the Juvenile Justice Board. 

Sanjay Dutt only foolish, not a terrorist: Counsel ...

Mumbai: After the Supreme Court upheld Sanjay Dutt`s conviction under the Arms Act in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case and sent him to five years in jail, his counsel Majid Memon Thursday said the Bollywood actor was "foolish" for illegally possessing weapons.

Dutt has been told to surrender in four weeks.

"Dutt was young and foolish back then for illegally possessing weapons. He is neither a traitor nor a terrorist. It is unfortunate that he has been branded a criminal for what can only be defined as foolishness," Memon told reporters.

Memon said that even if Dutt pretended to be strong and showed courage, he surely was a broken man from within.

"He has already undergone a traumatic 20 years, which in itself is a big punishment for illegally possessing weapons," Memon said.

"Today, Dutt is a much different a person from what he used to be in the 1990s. He has also suffered a lot on account of his foolish act. He has been under the cloud of accusations because of the snail`s pace of our litigation system," he added.

Memon said Dutt`s team of counsel would carefully examine the apex court judgment, examine every word and explore possibilities of a review petition to get out of the situation.

"But in my view, the window is very narrow and hopes do not seem to be very high. The entire film industry has plunged into gloom the moment the news spread like wildfire," he said.

The actor, who was convicted under the Arms Act, was awarded six years` imprisonment by a Terrorists and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act court in 2007.

However, the apex court reduced the sentence to five years. This means Dutt will be in jail for three years and six months since he has already undergone 18 months` imprisonment.

The apex court upheld the death sentence of Yakub Abdul Razak Memon in the case and commuted the death sentence of 10 others.

The 13 serial bomb blasts that rocked Mumbai March 12, 1993, claimed 257 lives.

Chennai: Tamil director Boopathy Pandian can`t stop raving about actor Arjun Sarja`s daughter, debutant Aishwarya Arjun, who will be seen in upcoming Tamil comedy ‘Pattathu Yaanai’.

"Not all star kids are blessed with acting prowess, but Aishwarya is an exception. I believe she has inherited acting skills from her father. She pulls of the most difficult scenes with ease and confidence. I`m extremely happy with the way she handles her role", Boopathy told reporters.

"What is impressive is that she agreed to play a school going character in her debut. I don`t think the daughter of any other star actor would agree to play such a role in her first film. She is a very supportive actress and picks up quickly," he added.

She is paired opposite Vishal Krishna in the film, which also features Santhanam, Sita, Jagan, Mano Bala and Karthik in important roles.

"The shooting is progressing at brisk pace in places such as Karaikudi, Madurai, Trichy and few other places. It`s a laugh riot and I`m sure audience will love it," said Boopathy.

1993 Mumbai blasts: Sanjay Dutt to file review petition today .....

Delhi: Actor Sanjay Dutt, who was sentenced to five-year rigorous imprisonment by the Supreme Court on Thursday, is to file a review petition on Friday, a report said. The ‘Munnabhai’ hitmaker has already served 18 months in jail, and if his petition is rejected, he will have to complete the remaining three and a half years of the sentence.

In a statement following the Supreme Court’s verdict, Dutt said, “I still believe in judiciary. My family is with me and I am still strong.”

The Supreme Court’s order entails Dutt to surrender within four weeks from the day of the verdict. During the 1993 serial blasts that rocked the entire city of Mumbai, the actor was found in possession of illegal arms that were subsequently linked to the masterminds behind the bombings.

The ‘Vasstav’ star has to let go of the several projects that he is a part of, films like the third in the ‘Munnabhai’ series, Rajkumar Hirani’s ‘Peekay’ and the like, if his review petition is rejected. Sanjay Dutt will have to spend three and a half years in jail if the Supreme Court doesn’t take his petition into regard. However, if this petition is dismissed, Dutt has an option of filing a curative petition too.

In addition to filing a curative petition, Sanjay Dutt’s last option would be to reach out to the Governor of Maharashtra, who can intervene and remit his sentence. However, that would totally be dependent on the recommendation of the State government.

Micromax A89 Ninja review......

The Micromax A89 Ninja is a budget Android smartphone that first made an appearance on the company's website in late-January, though the listing was without a price tag. It started retailing online a few days following the listing for Rs. 6,490. This dual-SIM phone is one among Micromax's wide range of low-priced Android phones, but is it worth picking over a similarly priced feature phone? We try to find out.

Build/Design
On first look, the phone doesn't evoke any emotion. It more or less follows the same design language that we've seen in other budget Android phones from Micromax. It has rounded corners, a chrome frame and a plastic back cover. 

The front features a 4-inch screen, three capacitive touch buttons - Menu, Home and Back, for navigation, and a light sensor.

The glossy back features a 3-megapixel-camera lens surrounded by a chrome ring, towards the top and a speaker grill near the bottom. The back also sports Micromax branding. The power/screen lock key sits on the right side, while the volume rocker is located at the left. All buttons also sport the chrome finish. The micro-USB port and 3.5mm headset jack is at the top of the phone. Build wise, the phone feels sturdy and durable.

In terms of hardware, the device is powered by a 1GHz dual-core processor with 512MB RAM, and has 2GB internal storage expandable up to 32GB with microSD card.

The Micromax Ninja A89 is a dual-SIM smartphone and supports GSM SIM card in both the slots. The SIM Card slots and a slot for the microSD card hide behind the back cover just above the battery slot. Unfortunately, the SIM cards are not hot swappable and you'll have to take the battery out if you want to replace either one of them. The microSD card is hot swappable though.

Display
The Micromax Ninja A89 comes with a 4-inch 262k-colour capacitive touch screen sporting a resolution of 480x800 pixels. We found the screen resolution to be decent for a device of this size, and the graphics and text appeared fine. The viewing angles looked good, and the under-sun visibility on the phone was decent, though we found the screen to be pretty reflective.

Camera
The 3-megapixel shooter takes decent images in daylight, although we feel that colour reproduction could have been better. Also, we observed that pictures taken in low-light conditions and indoors were a bit grainy.

The quality of videos captured through the back camera was average.

Overall, we feel that the phone's good for casual photography. The phone doesn't feature a front facing camera.

Software/ Interface
The Micromax A89 Ninja runs Android 4.0.4 (Ice Cream Sandwich). Micromax has skinned some elements of the user interface, such as the notification tray. The notification tray includes toggles for settings such as Wi-Fi, Brightness, Rotation, Bluetooth, GPS, Data and profiles (for alerts and other notifications). Similar to other ICS devices, there are five customisable home screens that can be filled with app shortcuts and widgets.

Micromax has also included some of its own apps including its own apps and content store, M! Store, and services store, M! Zone, in addition to its messaging app, HookUp, and friends locator app, M! Buddy and a game (Fruit Devil). The handset also offers FM Radio.

The handset sports three capacitive buttons - a Menu key, Home button and a Back key. Long pressing the Home key opens the app-switcher for switching between open/previously accessed apps. To be honest, we find the menu button redundant. Perhaps, Micromax could allow users to use the menu button exclusively as the app-switcher, on the lines of newer HTC phones. We're glad that the phone features stock icons, unlike the A110 Canvas 2. 

During our use of the phone we noticed some minor lag, especially while playing games, but other than that, we'd rate our overall experience as above average. We expected a bit more from a phone that runs on a dual-core processor. We're not sure if the phone would get updated to Jelly Bean, which offers a smoother user experience compared to ICS.

Performance/ Battery Life
The phone is powered by a 1GHz dual-core processor that is a MediaTek chip, and has 512MB of RAM on board. We did not encounter any crashes while working on the phone and multitasking was comfortable. We did notice some lag while navigating through the menu, and while playing some games. We were not able to play 1020p HD video clips, and 720p clips also stuttered. The phone also doesn't support .mov videos natively, but that can be easily fixed by downloading third-party video players.

The phone comes with the native Android browser and renders all webpages well. It doesn't come with Adobe Flash. The speaker on the phone delivers good quality sound with average volume levels. Also, since the speaker is located at the back, the volume levels further decrease when the phone lies on its back. 

Call quality was good. The phone is a dual-SIM GSM phone with support for one active and the other in active-standby mode.

The Micromax A89 Ninja comes with a 1450mAh battery and it's one of the major pain points of this phone. With intermediate usage during the day, including playing games, an hour of phone calls, and e-mail and Twitter notifications turned on, the phone just lasted half a day, or just 7-8 hours on a single charge, which is very disappointing. But it's worth mentioning that we had turned off Wi-Fi and the phone was hooked on to a 3G network, with brightness set to the highest level, during our use.

Verdict
The Micromax A89 Ninja is a decent budget smartphone for anyone looking to step on to the Android bandwagon but doesn't want to spend more. However, we wish Micromax could have shipped this phone with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

Other Android smartphone options that you could look at include the Lava Iris N400, Karbonn A6 and Xolo A500. If you don't really care about a rich app ecosystem, or multi-tasking, you could also consider the Nokia Asha 311. 

New Samsung Galaxy Note II lockscreen vulnerability surfaces: Report

The lockscreen vulnerability seems to be haunting many smartphone makers. Samsung seems to be the latest victim to this. According to a news report by The Verge, Terence Eden has discovered a new flaw in the lockscreen of Samsung Galaxy Note II.

With the help of this weakness an intruder can successfully take full control of the Samsung Galaxy Note II. So even if the smartphone is protected by a pattern, password, PIN or even face detection, it will take a few steps to bypass them and take control of the device.

It is noteworthy, that this lockscreen flaw is not on stock Android from Google. Only Samsung Galaxy Note II devices running on Android 4.1.1 or 4.1.2 are susceptible. As a matter of fact, even Samsung Galaxy S III seems to be unaffected by this vulnerability.

The only relief for the Samsung Galaxy Note II users is that it is not really a child's play to gain access to the smartphone. One will have to follow certain steps to be able to bypass the lockscreen. If you are curious to check out how to make most of this flaw, watch the video below.

Samsung has shared that the company will be rolling out an update to fix this problem at the earliest.

This is not the first time that a security flaw involving the emergency dialler of Samsung Galaxy Note II has been spotted. In the last exploit, the homescreen of Samsung Galaxy Note II could be used to launch programs and directly dial contacts from your phone. Samsung has recently launched its flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S4, at an unpacked event in New York. This smartphone is expected to retail from April 2013.

It is a well-known fact that Samsung Galaxy S4 will come with a 1.6GHz Exynos octa-core processor in some regions, and a 1.9GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon quad-core processor in others. As per a new report by SamMobile, India is likely to get the 1.6GHz Exynos octa-core processor version.

Selena Gomez had made Bieber cry......

Singer-actress Selena Gomez says being single is good and joked that she made Justin Bieber cry when they split.

The 20-year-old and Bieber, 19, seperated in January after two years of togetherness and while the "Spring Breakers" star feels good about being single, Bieber may not share his positive mood, reports contactmusic.com.

Appearing on The Late Show with David Letterman Monday, the host said: "Last time you were here, you were with Bieber. That's not going on now. And Gomez had replied 'No, I'm single. I'm so good.'"

The host went on to claim he had upset Bieber to the point of making him cry the last time he had appeared on the show, prompting Gomez to reply "Well then, that makes two of us."

Ranbir and Dips cosy up again....

The chemistry between former 'it' couple of B-Town Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone at the launch of their upcoming film's trailer confirmed that their return on screen would be an exciting one.

They were launching the first promo of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, directed by Ayan Mukerji and produced by Karan Johar, in Mumbai on Tuesday.

The 3-minute trailer shows Ranbir as a happy-go-lucky guy while Deepika plays a geek. The film also stars Kalki Koechlin and Aditya Roy Kapur.

Ranbir came to Deepika's rescue when she faltered on a question about her tattoo. Deepika had inked 'RK' on her nape while they were courting and promoting their 2008 film Bachna Ae Haseeno. When asked if she would do something similar while promoting YHD, Ranbir retorted: "Getting a tattoo done for promotions is really silly. I don't think actors in Bollywood, do things only for promotion and marketing. We also have our personal life and you should respect that." 

"Deepika is a very pretty actress and it is not difficult to act being in love with her. Since our first film, I have seen that she has grown a lot as an actor," Ranbir said.

Amitabh Bachchan follows Akshay Kumar, overtakes Khans as advance tax payer ...

Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan has stood second on the tax paying list by paying Rs.12 cr as tax. Amitabh Bachchan and Akshay Kumar have outnumbered the top three Khans.

In this financial year, the tax payment from Amitabh Bachchan will be 37 crore plus. The cumulative tax paid by the Bachchans, including Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, will be 51 crore. 

According to a leading daily, the Akshay became the highest advance income tax payer, followed by megastar Amitabh Bachchan who has filed aroundRs.12 crore.

Akshay has apparently paid Rs.18 crore. Big B is at number two, Salman Khan is on the third spot; he has paid Rs.11 crore as advance income tax. Shah Rukh Khan comes fourth, as he has shelled out Rs.10.5 crore as tax. Aamir, meanwhile, is believed to have paid Rs.8 crore.

"No one will talk about these things openly, but the advance income tax payer list has thrown up a few surprises this year. For the past couple of years, Salman's films have been blockbusters at the box office, but Akshay remains way ahead of the pack in terms of his tax payment," the daily quoted a trade insider as saying.

Rs.250 crore riding on Sanjay Dutt's projects.....

With Sanjay Dutt having to undergo a jail term of three-and-a-half-years following a Supreme Court order today, Bollywood trade analysts estimate that around Rs.250 crores are at stake involving his big budget film projects.

The apex court today upheld Dutt's conviction for illegal possession of arms in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case.

"As per the back-of-the-envelope calculations, around Rs.250 crore are riding on Sanjay, involved in various projects. These projects include big ticket upcoming movies Peekay, Policegiri, Zanjeer, Ungli among others," sources said.

Among the upcoming projects involving the 53-year-old actor isUngli, produced by Karan Johar's Dharma Productions, also starring Emraan Hashmi and Neha Dhupia.

When contacted, a top source at Dharma Productions said, "Bollywood is distraught over the SC judgement today.

The shooting of Ungli concerning Sanjay Dutt's part is complete and only some portion of it is remaining to be completed."

He, however, refused to share the amount of money at stake on Sanjay in the project.

Among other projects having Sanjay on board is "Zanjeer, directed by Apoorva Lakhia. Sanjay is reprising the role of Sher Khan, epitomised by veteran actor Pran in the original movie.

According to sources, aroundRs.50-60 crore are at stake inZanjeer, while Rs.25 crore onPolicegiri, which is the remake of a South movie. Sanjay is starring opposite Prachi Desai in the film.

"We have completed shooting forZanjeer. The verdict is shocking and I feel shattered. I am not worried about his (Sanjay's) presence for post-production and other formalities... My concern is that he fights back," Producer Amit Mehra told PTI.

Another big-ticket movie is Rajkumar Hirani's P.K. starring Aamir Khan and Anushka Sharma.

The shooting for the film began last week.

Producer of Policegiri, P P Agrawal said, "maximum of the shoot is over. For the remaining portion, we will see if we can shoot with Sanjay. Even if not it's okay...We may consider approaching court to allow him to shoot".
